2020 Speech and Debate

 For next week, you will need to create a script of either a DI, HI, POI, or DUO and be prepared to act it out.  I want you to watch the following video and post on your blog the following: 1) Hook (what is her hook)? 2) Thesis (what is her thesis)? 3) Order of Development (what points will she cover in her speech)? 4) Expert Testimony (at least two examples) 5) Personal Connection 6) Conclusion (what was it? Did she return to her hook?) NOTE - the above is for a a grade. Also note, you first draft is due next Wednesday. This should be a full working draft that we can discuss - not a partial one. 

 So today we are going to discuss topics that you have chosen for your speeches. Please note a couple of things: 1) Is this an informative speech or an oration? 2) If it is an informative speech think about the following a) Visual Aids b) What are you teaching and how will you teach it? c) Is this something that most people are not aware of? d) Why is this important? 3) If it is an oration think of the following: a) Does the topic oppose the statue quo? b) Why should the audience care? c) What is the opposing side and can you refute it? 4) For both essays  a) What is your thesis b) List three points (your order of development) that back up your thesis c) Sources - can you find expert testimony for your topic? d) What is your personal connection?

 Today we are going to look at a couple more speeches and discuss the following: 1) Hook 2) Thesis 3) Use of Evidence 4) Use of Personal Connection 5) Use of - "Why should the audience" care 6) Conclusion  (In oration the conclusion is a "call to action") 7) Topic We will also discuss ETHOS, LOGOS, PATHOS

 Welcome to Skagway Speech and Debate Class. This class is an ENGLISH credit and therefore you will be required to do more than a standard elective course. You will be responsible for three-four projects each semester and will be required to participate in two on-line tournaments.  Your first assignment will be to write either an informative speech or an oration. This speech will need to be 8-10 minutes long and will need to be memorized.  Also this semester you will practice and present an Excom and Extemporaneous Speech and either a HI, DI, or DUO Interpretation of Literature.
